LSC Meeting – February 21, 2020

February 21, 2020 – 9:30 A.M. Room 132

I. Call Meeting to Order

The meeting was called to order at 9:53 a.m.

II. Roll Call

Attending: Mr. Adams, Ms. Bakinpelu, Mr. Berrol, Ms. Evins, Mr. Gonzalez, Ms. Llorens, Ms. Mosak.

A quorum was present.

III. Approve Agenda

The agenda was unanimously approved with three amendments to “New Business:” Funding request for FBLA conference $4,405.44; fundraiser approvals; yearbook proposal.

IV. Approve Previous Minutes

Minutes of the February 21, 2020 LSC meeting were unanimously approved.

V. Principal’s Report

State of the School

Capital Improvements 2020-21 Update

  • The 4-week bidding process is now open. There will be clarity about the elevator after that. The project manager hired by CPS will be meeting with Mr. Adams weekly. Neighbors will be notified about construction work start dates and noise reduction. There are problems with 5 building doors; Mr. Adams will try to get these included in the capital improvement plan

CIWP

  • There are 4 areas of focus, with an action plan to be create for each: Balanced Assessment and Grading, Curriculum, MTSS, and Family and Community Engagement.  The CIWP must be approved by June 1. A staff survey indicates that staff want to learn more about the LSC role.

Budget

  • Mr. Adams reported on funding for programs and teacher positions. Summer construction will cut into church rental income.  The budget and spend-down plan for SY20 remaining funds will be reviewed at the March LSC meeting.

LSC Openings

  • More parents are needed.

Academic Updates

  • End of Semester 1/3
  • Only 1 freshman is off track for graduation.

Testing

  • SAT (Juniors Only) Tuesday, April 14 and PSAT (9th/10th) Wednesday, April 15th.
  • Juniors taking the SAT will get a free ticket to Six Flags. The 11th grade team is working with students and Kahn Academy to prepare for the SAT.

Friends of Sullivan

  • The group raised funds to purchase a new kiln for the art room.

Athletic Updates

  • The basketball season is wrapping up; Sullivan is in the state tournament.
  • Sullivan has a new cheer-leading coach.
  • Three wrestlers won regionals, went to sectionals.
  • Girls and boys teams are in bowling competitions.

Arts and Activities

  • Friends of Sullivan raised funds to purchase a new kiln for the art room.
  • Black Lives Matter Week Highlights, Black History Month Celebration 2 p.m. today (Feb. 21)
  • Students worked in teams to research the effects of 1619 on events today, producing articles and videos to make class presentations.
  • Alderman Hadden will meet with Civics students Monday, Feb. 24 to discuss city politics and policies; students will be writing letters and making presentations.
  • International Women’s Day will be celebrated March 7th with an event led by PAC and Mr. Zepeda.

Other Updates

Personalized Learning Walk-Through

  • Ms. Mosak reported on the Rise 49 visit and participants’ positive reactions to the student/teacher presentations and classroom visits, with increased understanding of Personalized Learning.

Bathroom renovations have been completed.

VI. New Business

Yearbook Proposal

  • The Yearbook Club and their staff sponsor made a presentation in support of their request for funding for a Sullivan Yearbook. The LSC unanimously approved funding in the amount of $4,500 for this year from the school budget.

FBLA

  • State Conference April 3-5th; 16 Sullivan students will participate. The LSC unanimously approved funding of $4,405.44 from the school budget to cover fees, registration, and hotel.

School Resource Officer Approval

  • Following discussion of the role of police officers in the school and the new CPS/CPD contract which gives principals more autonomy in hiring decisions, the LSC unanimously approved the hiring of a second school resource officer to fill a vacancy. No funding from Sullivan is involved.

Instructional Coach Position

  • The LSC unanimously approved $30,000, from Personalized Learning funding, for an instructional coach position for the rest of SY20 to work on curriculum development (not administration) with teachers, and help with the CIWP.

SAT Spring Break Prep, Academic Approach

  • The LSC unanimously approved spending $5,568.75 from the school budget for SAT prep, requested by students, to be offered April 5th-10th.

PPLC Update

  • Three teachers are interested.  Tiger Talks might be offered at a staff-directed Professional Development session.

Fundraiser Approvals

  • Girls’ softball, soccer and track teams requests to sell chocolates were unanimously approved. There was discussion of apparel sales and natural snack options.
